Therapy for Pervasive Gum Disease
Up to 80% of the population unknowingly has some form of gum disease. Characterized by a persistent bacterial infection surrounding one tooth or several teeth, gum disease causes little discomfort and produces few obvious symptoms in the early stages. When periodontal disease sets in and remains untreated, it can spread and compromise your gums, teeth, and bone.
Is Gum Disease Curable?
Unfortunately, gum disease is not curable. However, we can detect early warning signs of gum disease at your regular dental checkups. At this stage, prevention might be as simple as changing your brushing technique, improving your flossing routine, or changing the products you use for oral care at home. However, for more advanced cases, periodontal therapy might be required.
Periodontal Therapy
If your gums are red, swollen, or bleeding when brushing your teeth, you may have gum disease. At Germany Dental, we can often treat gum disease with one or more types of periodontal therapy including:
Scaling – to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line
Root Planing – to reduce rough areas on teeth roots
Antibiotic Therapy – to battle infection
Surgery – advanced cases may require gum surgery to promote growth of new, healthy tissue
Furthermore, gum disease can become a serious condition with implications far beyond tooth loss. Recent research indicates that gum disease can also lead to heart disease and strokes, as well as diabetes and complications during pregnancy. Therefore, it’s very important that we monitor your condition. As a result, expect to attend more frequent hygiene visits to be sure that your recovery is on track.
